Candlelight Meditation β Trataka
A Brief History of Meditation
Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years across cultures and traditions. In yogic philosophy, meditation is one of the eight limbs of yoga (Dhyana) as described in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Its purpose is simple yet profound: to quiet the mind, connect with inner stillness, and realize our deeper nature.
Across centuries, people have used meditation to cultivate peace, clarity, and balance β a tradition that continues today at Tejas Yoga Lab.
The Benefits of Consistent Practice
Meditation works best when practiced regularly, even if just for a few minutes a day. Over time, consistent practice can:
Reduce Stress β calming the nervous system and lowering cortisol.
Improve Focus β strengthening your ability to stay present.
Balance Emotions β building resilience and clarity in daily life.
Deepen Sleep β helping the mind and body prepare for rest.
Support Inner Growth β connecting you to your authentic self.
β¨ Consistency is more important than duration. Think βa little every dayβ rather than long, occasional sessions.
Using Objects in Meditation
While many meditations begin with focusing on the breath, yogis have long used objects of concentration to steady the mind: malas (beads), mandalas, statues, and natural elements.
One of the most accessible and powerful focal points is a candle flame. Its gentle light draws the eyes, centers the thoughts, and serves as a reminder of the inner flame of awareness.
Trataka: Candlelight Meditation Practice
Trataka (pronounced TRAH-tuh-kah) is the yogic practice of gazing at a single point of focus, most often a candle flame. It is said to purify the eyes, sharpen concentration, and awaken inner vision.
Hereβs how you can try it at home:
Find a quiet, dimly lit space where you wonβt be disturbed.
Place a candle 2β3 feet in front of you, at eye level.
Sit comfortably with a tall spine and relaxed shoulders.
Light the candle and gaze softly at the flame, blinking as little as possible.
Let the flame absorb your attention; when thoughts arise, gently return to it.
When your eyes water or feel strained, close them and visualize the flame at the space between your eyebrows (the third eye).
Hold the inner image as long as you can.
Open your eyes and repeat this cycle 3β5 times.
Close with a few moments of stillness, noticing how your body and mind feel.
β¨ Tip for Beginners: Start with just 2β3 minutes and gradually increase as your focus deepens.
Bringing It Into Your Life
Trataka can be a beautiful way to begin or end your day. Whether practiced alone, during a group class, or in the quiet of your own home, it offers a gentle yet profound path to clarity and presence.
At Tejas Yoga Lab, we invite you to explore candlelight practices as part of your yoga journey β connecting not only with your body, but with the subtle light within.
π Try Trataka before bed for restful sleep, or at dawn for a clear, focused mind throughout your day.
